**THE ROLE**
You will join a multidisciplinary and international research team working at the forefront of **nano-optics** and **nanophotonics** within the **Vectorial Nano-Imaging research unit** at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, led by **Dr. Antonio Ambrosio**.
The research activity focuses on the investigation and control of **light–matter interactions at the nanoscale**, combining nanophotonics, structured light, metasurfaces, and advanced optical techniques. The group studies and develops nanophotonic structures and metasurfaces designed to control the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic fields, enabling new approaches for manipulating vectorial light fields.
A major research direction of the group concerns the **optical properties of low-dimensional materials**, with particular focus on **anisotropic and polaritonic 2D materials**, where strong light–matter coupling leads to highly confined electromagnetic modes. These systems are investigated using advanced optical spectroscopy and near-field techniques to access nanoscale optical phenomena beyond the diffraction limit.
The research integrates design, nanofabrication, and optical characterization of nanostructured photonic systems and materials, with the goal of advancing both the fundamental understanding of nanoscale optical processes and the development of innovative photonic platforms.
Within the research team, your main responsibilities will be:
- Design and perform experiments in **nano-optics and nanophotonics**
- Develop and characterize **nanophotonic structures and metasurfaces**
- Generate and manipulate **structured and vectorial optical fields**
- Contribute to the **design, fabrication, and optical characterization** of nanostructured devices
- Investigate optical phenomena in **anisotropic and polaritonic 2D materials**, including experiments involving **near-field optical techniques**
- Analyze experimental data and contribute to the interpretation of results
- Collaborate with researchers from different disciplines
- Contribute to scientific publications and dissemination of results
**ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS**
- **PhD in Physics, Photonics, Condensed Matter, or a closely related discipline**
- Proven experience in **nano-optics and nanophotonics**
- Experience with **experimental optical setups and photonic characterization techniques**
- Experience with **nanofabrication processes in cleanroom environments**
- Strong publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
- Good command of spoken and written English
**ADDITIONAL SKILLS**
- Experience with **structured light or vectorial optics**
- Experience in **metasurface or nanophotonic device design**
- Hands-on experience with **cleanroom fabrication techniques** (e.g., electron-beam lithography, thin-film deposition, nanostructuring)
- Knowledge of **numerical electromagnetic simulations** (e.g., FDTD, FEM, RCWA)
- Experience with **data analysis tools such as Python or MATLAB**
- Experience with **2D materials, polaritonic systems, or anisotropic optical media**
- Experience with **near-field optical microscopy or nanoscale optical spectroscopy**
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment
**COMPENSATION PACKAGE**
- Candidates from abroad or Italian citizens who have carried scientific research activity permanently abroad and meet specific requirements, may be entitled to a deduction from taxable income of up to 90% from 6 to 13 years.
*Please submit your application using the online form and including a detailed CV, cover letter, and contact details of 2 references.*
